Our new rabbitry is stick-built. Literally with sticks. It’s pretty cool. By “vacation,” we mean not working for money. So we played some — in Roanoke and Marion — and worked for ourselves. Around the homestead, we almost completed the new rabbitry (we’ll update when it’s finished), moved a bunch of rocks to make a low stone wall by a sitting area in the yard, prepared [...] Spring is making itself evident. The maples are in full bud right now, and we see green on a few more trees (pin cherries?) now. Perennials are peeking out of the brown grasses. Wild animals are awake — “our” bear is on the prowl, skunks are active (click here for another local’s take on skunks), [...] With the unclenching of Winter’s unholy cold, we’re put in the mind of Spring, and begin our scheming. We’re stuffed. Life is good. If I am to become what I eat, then I want to make sure I do it right. We’ve had a bad week, but at least the three-year-old knows how to take care of us. Rabbits: making meat. Bees: making honey, then leaving in droves. Chickens: making eggs, but not many. Garden: making garlic. Sky: crying a river. We’re busy. Our rabbits are busy, our bees are busy, and our chickens are growing up. And we’ve finally got a nice pair of tables to eat on. |
